WEAVING METAL

THE CREATIVE HAND

The Creative Hand is the result of exploring different techniques with wire.

Toni was drawn to the technique’s of weaving and crocheting wire to look at processes of repeated actions working with one material to transform wire to become sculptural.

It became therapeutic to her, incorporating twisting and weaving she created her own tools and way of working to create these elongated moveable fingers.

She felt grounded creating something on her sofa without the means of a fully equip workshop. The idea of the maker in mind, as a person who uses their hands, they move with a material, feel a material, connect with a material. Wanting to create something that honours skill and movement. This piece represents a process of understanding technique, being playful with learning and creating something amusing and transformative.

The Creative Hand was awarded by the Worshipful Company of Tin Plate alias Wire Workers award (2020) and selected to be showcased at Munich Jewellery Week 2020 for the Considerations by CSM UAL collection of 43 exhibitors from Central Saint Martins. Ironically unable to attend the event as Toni sat on the same sofa the piece was made on with un-refundable tickets due to COVID regulations.
